Dynamic Access Class Barring and Relay Assisted Radio Resource Allocation Methods for Cellular M2M Networks c © Lilatul Ferdouse, 2015 Master of Applied Science Electrical and Computer Engineering Ryerson University Cellular based M2M systems generate massive number of access requests which create congestion in the cellular network. The contention-based random access procedures are designed for cellular networks which cannot accommodate a large number of M2M traffic. Moreover, M2M systems share same radio resources with cellular users. Resource allocation problem becomes a challenging issue in cellular M2M systems. In this thesis, we address these two problems by analyzing a contention-based slotted Aloha random access procedure for M2M networks using different performance metrics. The impact of massive M2M traffic over cellular traffic is studied based on different arrival rate, random access opportunity and throughput. An analytical model of selecting a base station (eNB) along with load balancing is developed. Finally, two methods have been presented and evaluated with M2M traffic. First one is dynamic access class barring method which controls RAN level congestion by selecting an appropriate eNB and applying load balancing method. Second one is relay-assisted radio resource allocation method which maximizes the sum throughput of the system by utilizing the available radio resource blocks and relay nodes to the MTC systems. Numerical results show that frame transmission rate influences the selection probability of the base stations. Moreover, the dynamic access class barring parameter along with frame transmission rate improve the overall throughput and access success probability among base stations as well as avoid overload situation in a particular base station.

Dynamic Resource Allocation and Access Class Barring Scheme for Delay-Sensitive Devices in Machine to Machin (M2M) Communnications

Supporting simultaneous access of machine-type devices is a critical challenge in machine-to-machine (M2M) communications. In this paper, we propose an optimal scheme to dynamically adjust the Access Class Barring (ACB) factor and the number of random access channel (RACH) resources for clustered machine-to-machine (M2M) communications, in which Delay-Sensitive (DS) devices coexist with Delay-T...

Estimation of Distribution Algorithm for Resource Allocation in Green Cooperative Cognitive Radio Sensor Networks

Due to the rapid increase in the usage and demand of wireless sensor networks (WSN), the limited frequency spectrum available for WSN applications will be extremely crowded in the near future. More sensor devices also mean more recharging/replacement of batteries, which will cause significant impact on the global carbon footprint. In this paper, we propose a relay-assisted cognitive radio senso...

A survey on resource allocation techniques in OFDM(A) networks

In this contribution, we present a survey on the radio resource allocation techniques in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems. This problem goes back to 1960s and that is related to properly and efficiently allocate the radio resources, namely subcarriers and power. We start by overviewing the main open issues in OFD...

Context-Aware Dynamic Resource Allocation for Cellular M2M Communications

While the huge number of machine-to-machine (M2M) devices connects to the LTE system, the bursty random access attempts from them are potential to cause severe random access collisions and degrade the successful probability as well as delay of network connection establishment. To address this issue, current LTE spec has specified access class barring (ACB) and enhanced access barring (EAB), but...

Spectrum Sharing between Cooperative Relay and Ad-hoc Networks: Dynamic Spectrum Access, Resource Allocation and Real-time Implementation

Yin Sun, Xiaofeng Zhong, Tsung-Hui Chang, Shidong Zhou, Jing Wang, and Chong-Yung Chi Abstract This paper studies the spectrum sharing problem between a cooperative relay network (CRN) and a nearby ad-hoc network that operates over the same spectral band. In the uplink CRN transmission, both the source node and relay node can interfere with the ad-hoc links. By virtue of that the CRN can predic...
